Good tidings! My name is Adrienne. I am a player up at Empire in Colorado. Recently we've been experiencing a gigantic power gap between new players and the rest of the chapter. Normally, wouldn't be a problem. However, new players are left feeling...out of place and unwanted. So, I decided I was going to start up a guild for new players. Just so they can feel a little more comfortable in our awesome LARP. I heard that Midway has a guild like this already. Could the guild master from that guild please give me some pointers to help this go as smoothly as possible.?

We have a pretty decent set up. Plot works with us giving us scaled jobs that the give the new players a range of experiences. Communication with the plot team if the most vital. Without their support the guild will not be successful. We are very fortunate that we have had excellent support from local plot teams, a huge influx of new players and a veteren set of players who enjoy backpacking young adventureres. Perhaps a skype chat session would help us answer some of your more specific questions? If you are interested in making yours a branch of he Midway Guild I am sure that would be more than possible. The idea is to have as many branches as we can operating in as many areas as we can so traveling players have a contact at new chapters and can travel without feeling like an outsider. All branches will be seperate entities operating under a common charter. Currently we have one branch up and running. One in formation and one other that we are laying the ground work to open possibly later this year. I am really suprised at the success we have already had, the younger players seem to enjoy it and I know the veteren players love helping out.

In game: we have a group of veteran /mid level PCs who are willing to run the guild. We have donated, bought, etc. various production including scrolls, gasses, potions and basic weapons and we hand these out to newbies. We own a cabin so members can bunk together, getting the new players to Bunn in is kind of our next step. Most newbies come with a vet or two. We run in game training - fighting, healing, as well as RP based things - lore for various creatures and such. Sometimes this is formalized - we want very much to have classes each faire- sometimes this is individual before or during a town mod. On large town mods when we split into groups, one makes sure to go with the newbies. We acquired a large number of delimited magical items. And one no very nice renew item that only renews lower levels and only a max number of levels per day. Baby healers feel awesome. And it's fun to renew people. We have a loot system that gives magic items to the people who need them first, this helps new players get magic items faster.
Obviously plot has worked with us to support this. But oog wise, town mods can have smaller monsters early on, and/or newer players can guard the back with the veterans playing support roles and saving the boomchuck or healing for the bigger guys. New fighters can fill in the line for refits and get back packed liked a pro. We make our new players feel valued, not falsely so, but genuinely because they're totally useful. At kzoo last month I went with a bunch of new players and a high level healer. I'm a gas rogue almost exclusively. We were fighting in mod cabins and at first j hung back, then I pulled a sneak around th each of one to gas all the things. Then I let them do the sneaking with gasses for support. A lot of mods are inherently progressive. That's great for learning. The point is for players to take the time to teach. And that's what we do in the guild is give them PCs who listen, teach and don't talk down to newbies. Even if j tell them to run away- it's because I'm running too.
Other stuff I've seen from plot are things that hurt if you hit them too hard, delimited monsters that can only be kb'd by lower levels and a ton of NPC support for the guild by giving us jobs to do.
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff. I'm also up for Facebook messages, Skype or whatever. Facebook.com/Drolefille
